Dealing with Difficult People
I searched Amazon for books on difficult people, and the collection seemed endless (you don't need any Amazon account to search and look at the books). Recently I estimated that Amazon sells at least 1100 different nonfiction books on the subject, listed on 47 pages.
On April 22, 2025, The New York Times published a list of six difficult-people books recommended by "therapists, psychologists and other workplace experts": Some People Are Just Difficult. Here’s How to Handle Them. The Times has a paywall, but the six books are:
- How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, updated 2022 edition
- Why Won't You Apologize? by Harriet Lerner
- The Asshole Survival Guide by Robert I. Sutton
- The Defining Decade by Meg Jay
- Difficult Conversations by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton and Sheila Heen
- The Art of Possibility by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander
I will check them to look for practices we can use on this site.
